Three short videos with Do-On Robert Thomas
The Buddha said, “Do not dwell in the past; do not dream of the future; concentrate the mind on the present moment.” Zen is the practice of meeting this moment. The Buddha discovered that by being completely and fully in the present moment, we can wake up to our true nature—our Buddha-nature.
In this short video below (3 minutes), SFZC dharma teacher Do-On Robert Thomas unpacks the first of three myths around what it takes to practice Zen. Here he talks about when is a good time to practice. He says it’s a myth that “things need to be just a certain way before you start to practice, they need to be somehow not how they are now.”
Do-On Robert is currently San Francisco Zen Center’s dharma teacher in charge of online initiatives. He was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest in 2000, and received dharma transmission from his Zen teacher, Zoketsu Norman Fischer, in 2009.
Robert will also be leading Meeting This Moment: Transforming Your Life through Zen Practice, a seven-week experiential online course exploring the fundamental principles and transformational practices of Zen Buddhism, beginning Tuesday, April 28. He will be joined by five other renowned Zen teachers, including Norman Fischer, Linda Ruth Cutts, Marc Lesser, Susan O’Connell and Furyu Schroeder.
