SFZC was saddened to learn of the death of the great poet, novelist, social critic, farmer, and ecologist Wendell Berry on August 31, 2026.
Wendell was a friend of Green Gulch Farm and visited a handful of times over the years. He last came in September 2008, when he and Wes Jackson, along with their wives, were in town for the Slow Food Nation gathering where they were the headliners. He toured the farm with then (and now!) Farm Manager Sara Tashker, and visited with old friends and Zen farmers Steve Stucky and Wendy Johnson, among others.
Wendell has been an inspiration for generations of young farmers. His clarity, humor, humility, and steady spirit will continue to inform how we practice our care for the land at Green Gulch Farm and beyond. There will be a memorial ceremony for him at Green Gulch Farm.
