Dear people of color community of San Francisco Zen Center, Green Gulch Farm and Tassajara,
San Francisco Zen Center is exploring how to build awareness and equity in dharma practice, and in the workings of all our centers—City Center, Green Gulch and Tassajara. As part of this intention, a team at Zen Center has undertaken an assessment to build understanding of how to support this vision. Members of this team include Central Abbess Linda Cutts, City Center Abbot Ed Sattizahn, Vice President Tova Green, SFZC Cultural Awareness Advocate Lee Lipp, City Center Director Shundo David Haye, Zen Center Board member Bruce Fortin and consultant Arinna Weisman. I often look up from my desk at a drawing, rendered in almost photographic realism, of Suzuki Roshi. It was sent to me by one of my prison pen pals. Armando is on death row in San Quentin, and we’ve been corresponding for several years now. Read more

Laying a Roof and Raising Consciousness: An Interview with Contractor Ezra Wynn on Being Atop the Guest House
Interview conducted by Lauren Dito
Among the many large-scale improvement projects at Green Gulch Farm this summer, the re-roofing of the lovely Lindisfarne Guest House was notable as much for the extreme complexity and tediousness of the job as for the uplifting inner effects of the experience as reported by some of the visiting workers. The uniquely shaped roof was beautifully completed in early July, thanks to the amazing craftsmanship of contractor Ezra Wynn. Read more
This month as a big portion of the construction on buildings at Green Gulch Farm is wrapping up, the Green Gulch Creek Restoration Project is taking off. This work aims to recreate a more natural meandering course for the creek instead of being restricted by a concrete channel, thus enhancing native riparian habitat for many species and widening the floodplain.
On Wednesday of last week, there was great excitement as a worker discovered a live member of a threatened species that the project aims to benefit: a California red-legged frog. Here are a few images of the strikingly marked creature. Read more
A volunteer is still needed to help at the Green Gulch produce stand at the Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market in San Francisco for every Saturday in September. Responsibility would be primarily for selling the flower bouquets, herbs, and fruit, from approximately 7 – 11 am every Saturday. Full commitment through September is preferred, but all are encouraged to inquire. Reply to Lauren Bouyea at firstname.lastname@example.org. Read more
Last year, the Green Gulch Ecosattvas* revived a program to encourage carpooling to our Sunday meditation and dharma talk. Vehicles with two or more occupants park free for the Sunday program, and single drivers are asked for a donation of $5. The money received is reinvested in the environment, helping to cover the additional cost for Green Gulch to purchase 100% renewable energy through Marin Clean Energy.
Now, ridesharing visitors will be offered “muffin bucks” in addition to free parking. These can be used for a dollar off the purchase of the muffins offered at the tea following the Sunday dharma talk. Read more
