Zenju started writing as an eight-year-old. In her twenties Zenju was writing short stories and she submitted one to a journal edited by Pearl Cleage. It was published and that was the first time she earned money as a writer.

Thomas Cleary translated many Zen texts, including koan collections and Dogen fascicles. His many brilliant translations from various spiritual traditions is a tremendous gift.
