Each of the Myriad Things
Reception: Friday, July 6, 7:30 – 9:00 pm
“Each of the myriad things has its merit, expressed according to function and place.” —Sekito Kisen
I have been taking photographs since I was eight years old. In the last couple of decades, my practice at San Francisco Zen Center and Tassajara has helped inform how I look at things, and where I find beauty and visual interest.
Sekito Kisen’s words from the Sandokai point to the value of all things, a notion echoed through centuries of Zen teaching. To paraphrase Dogen, in taking a picture I try to let each thing come forth and express itself, and in so doing, express its own part of the enlightened reality that always surrounds us.
