This snapshot from the spring of 2011 captures Urban Temple Dharma Teacher Ryushin Paul Haller appreciating the beginner’s mind of his grandson, Marcello, in a procession for Buddha’s Birthday in Koshland Park, across the street from City Center. Paul currently leads the Winter Practice Period at City Center, which started this morning with another kind of procession that took all the participants around to altars in various areas of the temple, acknowledging how our intention reaches across different daily activities and functional spaces. The practice period theme is apt: “Continuous Practice: What’s Happening Now?” Accompanying Paul and Marcello in the photo is student Tim Kroll, who will be formally invited next week to serve as shuso (head student) and assist Paul with leading this practice period.
