July Art Show: Shundo David Haye

Each of the Myriad Things

Reception: Friday, July 6, 7:30 – 9:00 pm

Ealing Broadway

“Each of the myriad things has its merit, expressed according to function and place.” —Sekito Kisen

I have been taking photographs since I was eight years old. In the last couple of decades, my practice at San Francisco Zen Center and Tassajara has helped inform how I look at things, and where I find beauty and visual interest.

Sekito Kisen’s words from the Sandokai point to the value of all things, a notion echoed through centuries of Zen teaching. To paraphrase Dogen, in taking a picture I try to let each thing come forth and express itself, and in so doing, express its own part of the enlightened reality that always surrounds us.

I have raved about David’s photos for years. He has a rare ability to plunge deeply and intimately into a visual moment. He does with his camera what long sitting occasionally does to the eye spontaneously. I feel goofy saying it, but David’s photos give a powerful intimation of zen. I strongly encourage people to check out and to support his work!

During the couple of years I was producing graphic materials for SFZC, in particular the yearly Tassajara guest season catalog, I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Shundo’s photos and of being able to use so many of them in the publications. A new batch of photos from Shundo was always cause of great excitement. Thank you Shundo David Haye!
